Ethiopia-born man charged in Victoria over alleged visa breaches

An Ethiopia-born man is expected to face Melbourne Magistrate’s Court today (6 June, 2025), charged with a total of 31 offences, including allegedly failing to comply with his visa-mandated conditions. 

The AFP charged the man, 28, today, after locating him in Melbourne. 

He has been charged with: 

  • 12 counts of failing to remain at a notified address, contrary to section 76C (1) of the Migration Act 1958 (Cth); 

  • Six counts of failing to ensure an electronic monitoring device remains in good working order, contrary to section 76D (3) of the Migration Act 1958 (Cth); and  

  • 11 counts of failing to comply with a requirement not to go within a certain distance of a school, contrary to section 76DAB (1) of the Migration Act 1958 (Cth).  

These offences each carry a maximum penalty of five years’ imprisonment and/or a $99,000 fine. 

He was also charged with one count of committing an indictable offence while on bail, contrary to section 30B of the Bail Act 1977 (Vic) and one count of conduct contravening a condition of bail, contrary to section 49F of the Summary Offences Act 1966 (Vic). These offences each carry a maximum penalty of three months’ imprisonment and/or a $9900 fine.
