Iraq-born man charged with alleged visa breaches

An Iraq-born man is expected to appear in Melbourne Magistrates’ Court today (23 April, 2025) charged with allegedly failing to maintain his electronic monitoring device in accordance with his visa conditions. 

The AFP charged the man, 50, today (23 April, 2025), after locating him in Melbourne.  

It will be alleged the man breached the conditions of his Commonwealth visa between 17 February, 2025, and 21 April, 2025. 

The man has been charged with:  

  • Seven counts of failing to maintain his electronic monitoring device, contrary to section 76D(3) of the Migration Act 1958 (Cth). 

These offences carry a maximum penalty of five years’ imprisonment and/or a $93,900 fine.
