Melbourne Immigration Detention Centre detainee charged over alleged assaults

The AFP has charged a detainee at the Melbourne Immigration Detention Centre (MIDC) in Victoria for allegedly assaulting detention security officers on two separate occasions.

The man, 22, from South Sudan, allegedly assaulted two male officers on 29 August, 2025. He allegedly punched the first security officer in an unprovoked attack, then struck the second when he attempted to intervene.  Both suffered bruises to the face and received medical assistance as a result of the alleged incident.

The South Sudan man was allegedly involved in a second incident on 10 September, 2025 which resulted in injuries to a third security officer. The security officer suffered minor facial injuries which required medical attention.

It will be alleged in court the detainee threatened staff at the facility after the second incident.

On 16 September, 2025 the AFP attended the facility to charge the man with:

  • Three counts of causing harm to a Commonwealth public official contrary to section 147.1 of the Criminal Code Act 1995 (Cth). The maximum penalty for this offence is 13 years’ imprisonment; and

  • One count of threatening to cause serious harm to a Commonwealth public official, contrary to s147.2(1) of the Criminal Code Act 1995 (Cth). The maximum penalty for this offence is 10 years’ imprisonment.

He appeared before the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court yesterday (16 September, 2025) and was remanded in custody to reappear before the same court on 19 December, 2025.
