NSW man charged for allegedly threatening federal parliamentarian

A New South Wales man is expected to appear before Parramatta Local Court today (21 January, 2026) charged over an alleged online threat toward a federal parliamentarian.

The AFP’s National Security Investigations (NSI) team investigated a report about a social media post and allegedly linked the man, 45, to the social media account.

Investigators executed a search warrant at a campsite in bushland near Bellingen, NSW, yesterday (20 January, 2025), where police seized an electronic device, which will undergo further forensic examination.

The AFP charged the man with one count of using a carriage service to threaten serious harm, contrary to section 474.15(2) of the Criminal Code (Cth).

This offence carries a maximum penalty of seven years’ imprisonment.

The AFP set up NSI teams in September, 2025, to target groups and individuals causing high levels of harm to Australia’s social cohesion, including the targeting of federal parliamentarians.
