NSW man charged over alleged online threat toward federal parliamentarian
A Berridale man is expected to face Queanbeyan District Court today (3 September, 2026) charged with allegedly threatening a federal parliamentarian on social media.
The AFP’s National Security Investigations (NSI) team began an investigation in July, 2026, after receiving a report of an alleged online threat to kill a federal parliamentarian.
Police linked the man, 53, to the alleged social media post.
The AFP executed a search warrant at a home in Berridale, NSW, today (2 September, 2026), where investigators seized a mobile phone for forensic examination.
The man was charged with one count of using a carriage service to make a threat to kill or cause serious harm, contrary to section 474.15 of the Criminal Code (Cth).
The maximum penalty for this offence is 10 years’ imprisonment.
AFP Commissioner Krissy Barrett announced the establishment of NSI teams in October, 2025, to target groups and individuals causing high levels of harm to Australia’s social cohesion, including the targeting of federal parliamentarians.
