Somalia-born man charged with alleged visa breaches in Victoria
A Somalia-born man is set to appear before the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court today (17 June, 2025), charged with allegedly failing to comply with his visa-mandated conditions and breaching conditions of bail.
The AFP charged the man, 43, today, after he was located in Melbourne.
It will be alleged the man breached the conditions of his Commonwealth visa by failing to maintain his electronic monitoring device.
The man has been charged with:
- Three counts of failing to maintain an electronic monitoring device, contrary to section 76D(3) of the Migration Act 1958 (Cth). The maximum penalty for this offence is five years’ imprisonment and/or a $99,000 fine;
- One count of committing an indictable offence whilst on bail, contrary to section 30B of the Bail Act 1977 (Vic). The maximum penalty for this offence is three months’ imprisonment and/or a $9,900 fine; and
- One count of contravening a condition of bail, contrary to section 49F of the Summary Offences Act 1966 (Vic). The maximum penalty for this offence is three months’ imprisonment and/or a $9,900 fine.
