Sydney man charged over menacing message sent to parliamentarian
The AFP charged a Sydney man yesterday (13 May, 2026) for allegedly sending a menacing message to a federal parliamentarian’s social media account.
The matter is scheduled to be heard in Windsor Local Court on 4 June, 2026.
Investigations began in April, 2026, when the AFP received a report regarding the message.
The AFP’s National Security Investigations (NSI) team linked the man, 22, to the alleged menacing message.
NSI investigators executed a search warrant in Bligh Park, NSW, yesterday and seized a number of electronic devices for forensic review.
The man was charged with one count of using a carriage service to menace, threaten or harass, contrary to section 474.17 of the Criminal Code (Cth).
He was granted strict conditional bail ahead of his first court appearance on 4 June, 2026.
This offence carries a maximum penalty of three years’ imprisonment.
AFP Detective Acting Inspector Andrew Bell said public officials should be able to conduct their duties free from threats and harassment.
“Sending menacing, harassing or offensive comments to another person has serious ramifications, including jail time, and the public should be aware that this behaviour is a criminal offence,” Det a/Insp Bell said.
AFP Commissioner Krissy Barrett announced the establishment of NSI teams in October, 2025, to target groups and individuals causing high levels of harm to Australia’s social cohesion, including the targeting of federal parliamentarians.
