Tasmanian man charged over alleged threats to federal parliamentarian

A Tasmanian man is expected to appear before Launceston Magistrates’ Court on 16 December, 2026, charged over alleged online threats directed toward a federal parliamentarian.

The AFP charged the Ravenswood man, 54, today (15 October, 2026) after an allegedly threatening email was sent to the office of a federal parliamentarian on 14 September, 2026.

It will be alleged the email contained explicit references to serious violence directed at the parliamentarian.

Investigators from an AFP National Security Investigations (NSI) team, with the assistance of Tasmania Police, executed a search warrant at a Ravenswood home today, where they seized multiple electronic devices, which will be the subject of further forensic examination.

The man was charged with one count of using a carriage service to menace, harass or cause offence, contrary to section 474.17 of the Criminal Code (Cth).

The offence carries a maximum penalty of five years’ imprisonment.

The man was granted police bail to appear in court on 16 December, 2026.

AFP Commissioner Krissy Barrett announced the establishment of NSI teams in October, 2025, to target groups and individuals causing high levels of harm to Australia’s social cohesion.
