Vietnamese national charged for allegedly escaping immigration detention in Melbourne

A Vietnamese national who allegedly escaped immigration detention in Melbourne, is scheduled to appear before Melbourne Magistrates Court today (11 September, 2025).

AFP arrested the man, 52, in Melbourne yesterday (10 September, 2025).

It will be alleged the man escaped from the Melbourne Immigration Detention Centre on 27 June, 2025 by scaling a fence.

AFP investigators located the man and arrested him at a house in Footscray.

The man was charged with one count of escaping from detention, contrary to section 197A of the Migration Act 1958 (Cth). 

The maximum penalty for this office is five years’ imprisonment.
