WA man sentenced for email threats to Commonwealth parliamentarian

An Eden Hill man has been sentenced to an 18-month intensive supervision order for sending threatening and menacing emails to a Commonwealth parliamentarian.

The man, 47, was sentenced yesterday (15 May, 2025) in the Perth Magistrates Court.

The AFP charged the man on 16 January, 2025, after investigating a report about the harassing emails.

Police executed a search warrant on the man, his car and home and examined his mobile phone, which contained the emails.

The man pleaded guilty on 15 May, 2025 to one count of using a carriage service to menace, harass or cause offence, contrary to section 474.17 (1) of the Criminal Code (Cth). The man was also fined $500 for drug offences.

AFP Commander Renee Colley said the AFP took all reports regarding the safety and security of Australian parliamentarians seriously.

“The AFP supports freedom of speech and political expression, but does not tolerate criminal behaviour,” Commander Colley said.

“No one should be harassed or threatened, whether that’s online or in person, and the AFP will take action when any offences are identified.”
