One program, countless opportunities: Elizabeth’s AFP Graduate Program experience
After nearly a decade in the private sector, and a Bachelor of Communications in her back pocket, Elizabeth found herself searching for a career change that offered variety, and the chance to make a lasting impact. The AFP Graduate Program caught her eye, promising an opportunity to expand her skillset, and make a difference beyond local issues.
In her final year of eligibility, Elizabeth took a leap and joined the AFP Graduate Program. Throughout the program, Elizabeth rotated through 3 dynamic and distinct teams: International Executive Support, Gender, and Major Crimes. Each rotation came with its own unique set of challenges, pushing Elizabeth to expand her skillset, and dive into areas she has never previously explored.
“The AFP Graduate Program helped me grow as a professional. It allowed me to develop skills in entirely new fields, while also granting me the opportunity to leverage my existing knowledge and experience”.
Crediting the AFP’s supportive and flexible culture, Elizabeth was able to pursue her Master of Criminology and Justice. With up to 130 hours of annual study leave and some reimbursement of course materials available for approved students, the flexibility for members to pursue higher education is unparalleled.
“Being a part of an organisation that not only understands, but supports you in your studies, is truly an anomaly – not many organisations offer this kind of assistance”.
With a dedicated support system behind her, Elizabeth has been able to balance her tertiary study, with her professional commitments.
For Elizabeth, the AFP has become her “career for life”. With the program guaranteeing graduates a permanent position upon completion, Elizabeth has found a home in the International Executive Support team.
“I used to think my career would be linear, doing the same job for different companies, but here, I can stay with the AFP and explore a wide range of roles. It is refreshing to have this variety without needing to jump from company to company”.
Elizabeth’s advice to future applicants? “Be patient, ask lots of questions, and embrace the learning process. It’s okay to feel like a beginner again, even with prior experience. The program is designed to help you grow and discover areas you might never have considered”.
Within the AFP, there is a strong focus on collaboration across teams and business areas. I’m constantly learning and engaging with different parts of the agency, which makes the work more dynamic and interesting.
