Overview

Join the front lines to combat cyber criminals.

Cybercrime is a constantly changing frontier of law enforcement. As a cybercrime investigator, you'll help defend against threats to Australia's security and economy.

Cyber Command works against high-impact cybercrime. To do this, we:

• investigate state-sponsored or criminal attacks against the Australian Government, critical infrastructure or important national systems
• disrupt cyber criminals using traditional and out-of-the-box techniques
• support and coordinate with domestic and international law enforcement to investigate cybercrime
• work with other agencies on cybercrime prevention and education.

Cyber Command has roles for:

• police officers
• protective service officers
• specialists.

Specialist (unsworn)

What you'll do

Specialists in Cyber Command take the fight to the field. As a specialist, you'll use your technical skills to achieve team goals.

This could include:

• analysing network data and malware to identify offenders
• advising and assisting with search warrants
• investigating illegal activity using your technical skills
• working alongside other law enforcement agencies or partners
• developing new technology and tools to help investigations
• disrupting cybercrime through covert online engagement
• providing advice and guidance on emerging trends and threats in cybercrime.

If you join as a specialist, you'll apply for a job at a specific band level, which could be as a:

• Technical Officer (Band 4)
• Technical Analyst (Band 6)
• Senior Technical Analyst (Band 8).

Police or protective service officer

What you'll do

Sworn officers in Cyber Command take the fight to the field. We use technical and intelligence support to arrest and disrupt cyber criminals.

This could include:

• investigating illegal activity using your policing knowledge
• interviewing witnesses, suspects and victims
• working with other law enforcement agencies, partner agencies or industry partners
• working with prosecutors to investigate and resolve criminal matters
• attending court to give evidence when required.

As an officer in Cyber Command, you'll have access to a wide range of benefits and conditions.

Eligibility

To join our team of cybercrime specialists you must:

• be aged 18 years or over
• be an Australian citizen
• hold appropriate qualifications for the specific role
• have extensive knowledge of IT security
• be able to obtain a high-level security clearance.

To become a sworn cybercrime investigator, you generally must have at least 2 years of experience in the AFP as either:

• a police officer
• a protective service officer.

Joining the AFP as a new recruit

To start your career as a police officer or protective service officer with us, you must:

• be aged 18 years or over
• be an Australian citizen
• hold a valid Australian driver's licence (P plates are accepted, if you have a learners licence don't apply until you have your provisional licence)
• meet our character standards
• hold at least one of the following qualifications:
  • Year 10 Certificate and 2 years of work experience
  • Year 10 Certificate and a nationally recognised vocational education qualification at Certificate III level or higher
  • Year 12 Certificate
  • vocational education (TAFE) qualification or university qualification at Diploma level or higher.

You must also provide evidence that you:

• have had 2 primary doses of an approved COVID-19 vaccine or one dose of the Janssen (Johnson & Johnson) vaccine at the time of application (evidence can be provided in the form of an immunisation history statement or COVID-19 Digital Certificate)
• hold current first aid and CPR certifications
• can swim 100 m freestyle.

Joining the AFP from another Australian police force

If you have at least 3 years of operational policing experience, and have not been out of a policing role for more than 5 years, you may be eligible to join the AFP as a police officer through our Lateral Program.

You'll be expected to hold a Diploma of Public Safety (Policing) or equivalent and to have served in a state-based PTG.

You must also:

• be an Australian citizen
• be up-to-date with COVID-19 vaccinations
• have and maintain a Negative Vetting 1 security clearance
• hold current first aid and CPR certifications
• show evidence that you can swim 100 m freestyle.
