Cairns man served notice to appear in court over alleged online threat to federal parliamentarian

A Cairns man is expected to appear before Cairns Magistrate's Court on 3 December, 2026, for allegedly threatening a federal parliamentarian on social media.

The AFP’s National Security Investigations (NSI) team began investigations into the man, 53, after receiving a report of an online threat made towards a parliamentarian on social media.

A search warrant was executed at an Earlville home yesterday (28 October, 2026), before the man was issued with a Notice to Appear for one count of using a carriage service to menace, harass or cause offence, contrary to section 474.17(1) of the Criminal Code (Cth).

The offence carries a maximum penalty of five years’ imprisonment.

AFP Commissioner Krissy Barrett announced the establishment of NSI teams in October, 2025, to target groups and individuals causing high levels of harm to Australia’s social cohesion, including the targeting of federal parliamentarians.

Information about threats to the community can be reported to the National Security Hotline on 1800 123 400, or via Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
