Queensland man fined over false claims made during 2022 Federal Election campaign
A Queensland man has been fined $1000 for providing false information to the Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) during the 2022 Federal Election period.
The man, 42, was sentenced in the Brisbane Magistrates Court today (Thursday, 30 May, 2024) after he was charged by summons on 30 January, 2024.
The AFP charged the man after investigating a referral from the AEC that raised concerns the man had provided false or misleading information to the AEC about the residential address of himself and family members.
The man provided the false information while standing as a candidate in the 2022 Federal Election.
The man pleaded guilty on 5 April, 2024, to one count of knowingly providing false or misleading information, contrary to section 137.1(1) of the Criminal Code 1995 (Cth).
He was fined $1000 and placed on a two-year good behaviour bond.
