Sydney man charged with possessing knife at airport

A Sydney man is scheduled to appear before Downing Centre Local Court today (10 March, 2025) charged with allegedly possessing a knife at an airport terminal.

AFP officers responded to an incident yesterday evening (9 March, 2025) following reports from members of the public regarding a man seen with a knife on a bus heading from Central Station to Sydney Airport.

The man was allegedly seen stabbing rubber handles, guardrails and his bus seat with a knife.

AFP officers attended the Sydney Airport arrivals forecourt and located the man, 31, who was allegedly holding a hay-bail hook. The man dropped the instrument when instructed by AFP officers and was arrested without further incident.

Officers searched the man and found a knife with a 10cm blade in his pants.

The man was charged with:

  • One count of using a knife in a public place to cause a person to fear for safety, contrary to section 93IC of the Crimes Act 1900 (NSW); and
  • One count of destroying or damaging property, contrary to section 195 of the Crimes Act 1900 (NSW).

He was refused bail.

AFP Detective Acting Inspector James McMillan said travellers deserved to feel safe at airports and the presence of prohibited weapons, such as knives, would not be tolerated.

“Carrying a knife in a public place such as an airport is a serious offence, and punishable with imprisonment for up to four years,” Det a/Insp McMillan said.

“The community are our eyes and ears, and we thank them for their swift reporting and courage in this matter.”
