WA man charged over alleged online threat to federal parliamentarian
A West Australian man has been charged with allegedly threatening a federal parliamentarian.
The AFP’s National Security Investigations (NSI) team began an investigation on 6 July, 2026, after receiving a notification of an alleged online threat to kill a federal parliamentarian.
Police allegedly linked the man, 47, to the social media post and executed a search warrant yesterday (17 July, 2026) at a home in Bayswater, WA.
The man was charged with two counts of using a carriage service to make a threat to kill or cause serious harm, contrary to section 474.15 of the Criminal Code (Cth).
The maximum penalty for this offence is 10 years’ imprisonment.
He is scheduled to appear in Perth Magistrates Court on 21 August, 2026.
AFP Acting Inspector Fleur Jennings said threats towards elected officials would not be tolerated.
“Public officials deserve the ability to carry out their duties without facing the threat of harm,” a/Insp Jennings said.
“The AFP has the resources and technology to locate and identify offenders who threaten parliamentarians and high office holders and bring them before the courts.”
AFP Commissioner Krissy Barrett announced the establishment of NSI teams in October, 2025, to target groups and individuals causing high levels of harm to Australia’s social cohesion, including the targeting of the federal parliamentarians.
